Softball Splits Friday Doubleheader and Season Series With No. 24 West Chester

SU takes Game 2, 9-7, after 3-2 setback in Game 1

The Shippensburg University softball team rallied for a Game 2 victory on Friday to achieve a split of its road doubleheader with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division rival No. 24 West Chester, claiming the nightcap by a score of 9-7 after dropping the opener, 3-2.

Shippensburg (18-12, 6-4 PSAC East) split the season series with West Chester (30-11, 10-2) and sits in third place in the PSAC Eastern Division. The Raiders have three PSAC East doubleheaders remaining as they pursue their second straight postseason appearance.

SU's Game 2 win was in come-from-behind fashion, as the Raiders rallied from a 4-0 deficit after the opening inning with four runs in the top of the second to even the score. Shippensburg took a 6-4 lead in the fourth and added three runs in the sixth. SU survived three late runs from the Golden Rams for the win.

In the opener, SU trailed 3-0 entering the sixth before an RBI-single by sophomore Meghan Klee and an RBI-double by freshman Courtney Coy got the Raiders within a run before WCU's Amanda Houck retired the final four batters of the game by inducing groundouts.

Coy was integral to the Raider cause on the day both at the plate and in the circle. In Game 2, she entered in relief in the first inning and threw 2.2 shutout innings as a bridge that would allow the Game 1 starter, junior Taryn Wilson, to work in relief. Coy scattered three base-runners in her outing to pick up her second victory of the season. Wilson achieved a four-inning save.

Overall, Wilson threw 10 innings on the day – striking out six. She allowed five earned runs. Senior Chloe Collins got the Game 2 start in the circle.

Senior Anna Warfield was 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and three runs scored in the nightcap. Coy collected a hit in each game. Collins had two hits, an RBI, a stolen base and a run scored on the day.

Senior Tara Bicko and sophomore Kayla Bonawitz each provided two hits from the top of the order in Game 2. Bicko was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Bonawitz was also 2-for-4 with a double but provided four RBIs – a two-run double in the second and a two-run single in the sixth.

Shippensburg returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kutztown.
