SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon against Shepherd, dropping Game 1, 8-7, before taking Game 2, 1-0, behind a complete-game shutout from junior
Taryn Wilson at Robb Field.
Shippensburg (16-10) got a sacrifice fly from senior
Chloe Collins in the nightcap, to down Shepherd (20-10) and salvage a split. Senior
Tara Bicko doubled to lead off the fourth inning for the only Raider hit of Game 2.
Bicko finished the day 3-for-7 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore
Meghan Klee reached base in all four of her plate appearances in Game 1. She singled in the bottom of the fourth, registered two walks and was hit by a pitch.
Wilson was dominant in the circle for SU in Game 2. The junior surrendered just two hits in the game while striking out three en route to her team-high 13th win of the season. She suffered the Game 1 loss, however, yielding two runs in 3.1 innings of relief.
Shippensburg will return to action Friday at 2:30 p.m. when it travels to take on Millersville in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader.
Game 1
After the Rams scored one run in the top of the first, SU responded with two runs in the home half of the frame to take the lead. Sophomore
Kayla Bonawitz singled to center with one out to give SU its first baserunner of the game. Collins then reached on a Shepherd fielder's choice error to put runners on first and second with one out for the Raiders.
Klee then drew a walk to load the bases. After Shepherd recorded the second out on a fielder's choice, sophomore
Micaela Ghanayem came up clutch with a two-out, two RBI-single to give SU the lead.
The Raiders extended their lead in the second, adding four runs on three hits. Collins drove in the third run with a RBI single to center. Freshman
Courtney Coy singled to left two batters later, driving in two to give SU a 5-1 lead. The Raiders added their fourth and final run of the frame on a wild pitch to make it 6-1 after two innings of play.
In the third, Bicko singled down the left-field line, scoring sophomore
Kendall Geis to make it 7-1.
Shepherd would not go quietly, however, and used a five-run fourth to get back into the game and eventually plated two more runs in the sixth to take an 8-7 lead. The Raiders were set down in order in both the sixth and seventh innings, ultimately falling to the Rams in Game 1.
Game 2
After both pitchers exchanged zeroes thru the first three innings, SU got on the board thanks to timely situational hitting. Bicko led the fourth off with a double to left field. and Bonawitz followed with a sacrifice, allowing Bicko to advance to third. Collins then flew out to center allowing Bicko to score, giving SU the 1-0 lead.
One run was all the run support Wilson needed,as she retired the final 10 Ram hitters to salvage the split in the nightcap.
