SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team received complete-game pitching performances from senior
Chloe Collins and junior
Taryn Wilson on Saturday and cranked out 14 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division rival Kutztown, winning 6-3 and 3-2 in action from Robb Field.
Shippensburg (13-7, 2-0 PSAC East) and Kutztown (11-10, 0-2) were playing games for the first time in two weeks, as inclement weather has wreaked havoc recently on each team's schedule. Saturday's games also marked the divisional opener for both teams.
In Game 1, Collins was rock solid from the circle, walking just one while striking out six. She yielded three unearned runs in the seventh inning, but the Raiders had already established a 6-0 lead entering the final frame. At the plate, Collins crushed a two-run homer to left field in the third inning and finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Raiders opened the scoring in Game 1 with a two-out single in the second by sophomore
Emily Zaring, who finished the opener 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. In a three-run sixth inning, SU got RBI-doubles from freshman
Courtney Coy, Zaring and senior
Macy Luck.
In Game 2, Wilson notched her 10th pitching victory of the season by scattering two runs on five hits. She worked around five walks by striking out six hitters. Wilson held Kutztown scoreless until the seventh, in which she yielded a pair of runs.
A three-run third inning proved to be the difference for the Raiders in the nightcap. Luck led off with a walk and stole second base before senior
Anna Warfield also drew a walk. Senior
Tara Bicko then sent a hot shot down the third-base line that was deflected by the third baseman, allowing the first run to score and putting two runners in scoring position.
Sophomore
Kayla Bonawitz made it 2-0 with an RBI-single into right field before Collins hit a groundball on which the first baseman dropped the incoming throw, allowing Bicko to score and make it 3-0 in favor of the Raiders.
Sophomore
Meghan Klee had a pair of hits, including a double, in Game 2. Bicko finished the day with two hits (including a double) and two runs scored. Luck was 2-for-5 with two steals.
The doubleheader sweep was Shippensburg's first over Kutztown since the 2014 season. The Golden Bears had won nine of the previous 13 meetings between the two teams over the last three seasons.
Shippensburg's games on Monday with Lock Haven have been postponed because the Bald Eagles need to make up divisional games that day. Therefore, SU will return to action Friday, April 6 at 1 p.m. with a home doubleheader against West Chester from Robb Field.
