Shippensburg University's
Kaylee Mowery was named the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Cross Country Freshman of the Year on Tuesday afternoon after voting was conducted by the league's coaches.
Mowery was the top freshman at the 2018 PSAC Championships; she was the only rookie to place among the conference's Top 20 finishers. Her 12th-place time of 24:33 resulted in an All-PSAC First Team award and was integral to the Raiders winning the 2018 PSAC Championships by a four-point margin.
At the 2018 Atlantic Region Championships, Mowery was the No. 3 freshman in the field and the second-fastest freshman from a PSAC school. Mowery finished 25th in 25:48 to earn an All-Atlantic Region classification from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). SU finished third at the regional championships to qualify for the national championships.
Overall, Mowery served as a scoring runner in seven of her eight races in her debut season. Her highest scoring position was a turn as SU's No. 2 runner at Gettysburg; she also served as the team's No. 3 runner both at the PSAC Championships and at Dickinson in the "Short" 4K race. Mowery was one of just three Raiders to compete in all eight races in the 2018 season.
Mowery is the sixth Raider in history to be named the PSAC Women's Cross Country Freshman of the Year – joining Abby Huber (2007), Neely Spence (2008), Patty Reis (2010), April Schlusser (2011) and
Casey Norton (2013). The award was first issued in 2004.
