RECAP: Men’s Soccer Caps Regular Season With 2-0 Win at The Rock

Iacobelli scores both SU goals, including a late dart to clinch the victory

Freshman Owen Iacobelli scored a pair of goals Saturday to propel the Shippensburg University men's soccer team to a victory in the regular-season finale, posting a 2-0 road result at Slippery Rock in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Shippensburg (10-3-3, 6-2-3 PSAC) secured a home playoff match on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the PSAC Quarterfinals with its victory over Slippery Rock (6-10-2, 4-6-1). The Raiders will earn the No. 3 or No. 4 seed in the conference tournament pending the results of Saturday evening's Gannon vs. Millersville match. [[UPDATE: SU earns the No. 4 seed and will host East Stroudsburg.]]

Iacobelli's first goal of the match came in the 32nd minute, as he finished a cross from freshman Cory Ferguson for his second tally of the season. His clincher with less than two minutes remaining is fit for the highlight reel, as he fired a free kick missile from 35 yards out into the top-right corner of the goal to produce the final result.

Shots on goal were 7-5 in SU's advantage, and corner kicks were 6-3 in favor of the Raiders. Senior goalkeeper Garret Watson made five saves to record his fifth solo shutout of the season.

Shippensburg's 10 victories are its most since achieving a school-record 14 wins in the 2010 season. The Raiders finished the regular season with a 6-1-1 road record, with the only blemish being the infamous makeup match at Mercyhurst last Sunday.

SU's 21 conference points, meanwhile, are its most in a season under head coach Jeremy Spering and the most by the team in more than 25 years.

UP NEXT: Tuesday, 4 p.m. vs. East Stroudsburg (PSAC Quarterfinals)
