RECAP: Men’s Soccer Battles to 1-1 Draw With Rival Millersville

SU and Ville exchange scoring chances but end with equal result

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team battled its longtime Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) rival Millersville on Sunday and ended up with its second tie of the weekend, as the annually feisty matchup with the Marauders concluded in a 1-1 draw from David See Field.

Shippensburg (9-2-2, 5-1-2 PSAC) opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a goal on a free kick, as freshman Julian Horstmann headed home a splendid entry from junior Colin Marks (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) for his second goal of the season. SU maintained a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Millersville (6-3-5, 4-2-2) ramped up the pressure at the start of the second half and was rewarded with an equalizer just 5:25 into the frame. Chase Flickinger ripped a volley low into the net for his fifth goal of the season off an assist from Nicholas Leinbach.

Both teams had numerous opportunities to add more to the scoresheet, but the 51st-minute tally proved to be the last of the match. Of the many notable moments, perhaps the best scoring chance was a point-blank rocket from freshman Owen Iacobelli with three minutes remaining that was stopped by Marauder keeper Darian McCauley.

Shots on goal were 8-5 in favor of the visitors, as senior goalkeeper Garret Watson made seven saves for the Raiders. McCauley was credited with four saves. Corner kicks were 6-3 in SU's favor.

The teams combined for 45 fouls and eight yellow cards.

SU (17 points) and Millersville (14 points) maintain fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the PSAC standings. Both teams have a game in hand on first-place Gannon (21 points) and third-place East Stroudsburg (18 points).

West Chester (19 points), SU's opponent on Wednesday, sits in second place in the conference standings. The Raiders have three PSAC games remaining – with Wednesday's match being the regular-season home finale.

The Top 6 teams qualify for the PSAC playoffs.

UP NEXT: Wednesday, 3:30 p.m. vs. West Chester.
