The Shippensburg University volleyball team swept a pair of matches on Friday at the 2017 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)/Mountain East Conference (MEC) Crossover, defeating Urbana and host West Virginia State to run its winning streak to three matches.
Shippensburg (3-3) defeated Urbana by scores of 25-14, 25-20 and 26-24. SU then defeated West Virginia State by scores of 25-17, 25-27, 25-20 and 25-21.
Sophomore
Samantha Webber led the Raiders in kills and blocks on the day while hitting .333 over the two matches. Webber finished with 23 kills and nine blocks. Junior
Morgan DeFloria had 19 kills, 25 digs and five service aces.
Sophomore
Kendall Johnson had 17 kills and seven blocks, while sophomore
Gabriella Johnson had 15 kills and eight blocks. Freshman
Emily Hangen had a strong day as the setter with 78 assists and seven kills to just one error.
Defensively, sophomore
Megan Forstburg had a team-high 34 digs and matched DeFloria with five aces.
Shippensburg will head to the University of Charleston for its Saturday matches of the PSAC/MEC Crossover, first taking on the host Golden Eagles at 1 p.m. before facing Notre Dame (Ohio) at 4 p.m.
Match 1: SHIP 3, URBANA 0
Shippensburg used some lengthy rallies en route to its straight-set win over the Blue Knights. In the first set, SU held a 12-10 lead before scoring six consecutive points and eight of the next 10 overall to take control. The second set featured SU racing out to leads of 9-3, 17-9 and 22-11. In the third set, SU trailed 23-18 before rattling off five straight points to tie the score. The Raiders closed the match on an 8-1 run to earn the sweep.
DeFloria led the Raiders with eight kills, while Forstburg paced the team with 14 digs. Junior
Courtney Malott had five kills, 11 digs and two block assists. Among the contributors off the bench, freshman
Alana Pergine slammed three kills without an error.
Match 2: SHIP 3, WEST VA. STATE 1
Shippensburg trailed 8-7 in the opening set before reeling off a 9-0 to take control of the opening frame. SU had a 24-22 lead in the second set, but the Yellowjackets rallied with five of the final six points of the frame to even the match.
The Raiders used a 10-3 run early in the third set to erase a 4-0 deficit. In the fourth and final set, SU overcame multiple early deficits with a 5-1 run in the middle of the frame to begin pulling away.
Webber ripped 16 kills, one short of her season high, to complement six blocks. Hangen had 45 assists and four kills.
Kendall Johnson (12) and DeFloria (11) also had double-digit kills in the match.
Junior
Bridget Terrel was one of three players with three service aces, along with Forstburg and DeFloria.
