SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team made the most of its scoring opportunities on Monday, erupting for a season high in goals with a 5-2 non-conference victory over Holy Family on a muggy evening at David See Field.
Shippensburg (2-2-2) got two goals and two assists from junior
Cole Kropnick and a goal and two assists from sophomore
Colin Marks. Kropnick's six goals through six games this season equals the output of SU's top goals scorers from 2016 (senior
Jan Striewe and
Colten Arnold each had six).
Marks opened the scoring in the 15th minute by ripping a volley into the lower left portion of the net to cap off a splendid passing sequence. Sophomore
Isiah Dorsey made a nifty run up the left side of the field and crossed into Kropnick, who then back-heeled the ball in stride to Marks for the finish.
With the score tied in the 33rd minute, Marks evaded a defender off a short corner kick and delivered a perfect through ball into the box that Striewe headed home for his second tally of the season. SU maintained a 2-1 lead into the intermission.
The Raiders scored twice in the opening 4:25 of the second half to pull away. In the 48th minute, Marks sent a slick through ball into Kropnick, who finished the breakaway by sending his shot five-hole on the goalkeeper. Just 95 seconds later, Kropnick sent a pass into junior
Logan Koch, whose shot ricocheted off a leg and into the goal for his first tally.
Kropnick finished the SU scoring in the 57th minute with a dipping bender into the right corner of the cage off a free kick. It was his second multi-goal game of the year and also his second goal at home off a free kick.
Junior
Matt Harder was credited with two saves as he improved his record to 2-2-2. Mark Pohl made six saves for the Tigers.
Shippensburg returns to action at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Gannon for its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match of the season.
