SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team used a complete-game shutout from junior
Gabe Mosser in Game 1 to salvage a split in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader with Lock Haven Saturday afternoon on Vs. Cancer Day from Fairchild Field.
Shippensburg (11-15-1, 5-5 PSAC East) defeated Lock Haven (18-6, 7-3) in Game 1, 9-0, but fell by a score of 3-1 in Game 2.
Junior
Grant Hoover recorded a 4-for-6 day at the plate, scoring two runs. Senior
Ryan McMillen finished the day 4-for-7 with two triples, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Sophomores
Jack Goertzen and
Cash Gladfelter also recorded multi-hit days for SU. Goertzen finished 3-for-7 with two RBIs while Gladfelter finished 2-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored.
Senior
Mark Curtis started Game 2 for the Raiders with freshman
Kyle Lysy and sophomore
Michael Hope pitching out of the bullpen.
Shippensburg will complete its four-game set with the Bald Eagles tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader in Lock Haven.
Game 1
Mosser turned in another dominant performance on the mound, throwing seven shutout innings, surrendering just four hits, walking none and striking out five. This marks the third consecutive start Mosser hasn't yielded an earned run; the junior from Parkland has now thrown 21 innings without allowing an earned run in conference play with 26 strikeouts.
The Raider offense scored in five of the six innings they went to the dish, including the first four innings of work off Lock Haven ace Jacob Belinda. In the bottom of the first, senior
Jake Kennedy knocked in the first Raider run with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Gladfelter.
Sophomore
Drew Bene followed that with a double to right-center field, scoring junior
Dalton Hoiles. Goertzen capped the three-run first with a RBI single up the middle that scored Bene.
The Raiders added one run in each of the next two innings to extend their lead to 5-0 heading into the home half of the fourth. Hoover led off the fourth inning with a single to left field. SU then executed a textbook hit-and-run with sophomore
Tommy Baggett singling to right allowing Hoover to advance to third.
With runners on the corners, McMillen singled to left, scoring Hoover, and pushing the Raider lead to 6-0. Baggett would later score on a wild pitch to give SU a seven-run advantage with three innings to play.
SU would add two runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Kennedy and Goertzen to cap off the 9-0 victory.
Belinda allowed six earned runs to SU after entering Saturday having allowed just seven earned runs on the season through 33 innings.
Game 2
Curtis kept the Raiders in the game over his six innings of work, allowing nine hits and surrendering just three earned runs while striking out four. Lysy relieved Curtis in the seventh and recorded the first two outs before Hope entered to record the final out of the inning via strikeout.
The Raider bats were unable to solve Lock Haven's Mike Anthony, who threw a complete game with six strikeouts to seal the 3-1 victory for the Bald Eagles. The Raiders lone run came on a RBI groundout from Gladfelter that scored McMillen in the sixth.
