Baseball Earns Split in Sunday PSAC Doubleheader At Lock Haven

SU takes Game 1, 5-3 in eight innings; drops Game 2, 5-2

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team split with Lock Haven on Sunday afternoon in the final two games of its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division series against the Bald Eagles.

Shippensburg (12-16-1, 6-6 PSAC) took the first game from Lock Haven (19-7, 8-4) in eight innings, 5-3, on a game-winning RBI single from sophomore Jack Goertzen that scored junior Dalton Hoiles. The Raiders dropped the second game of the doubleheader by a score of 5-2.

Junior Nick Spangler led the Raiders offensively going 4-for-7 on the day with one RBI. Spangler was the lone Raider to collect multiple hits in both games for SU. Hoiles finished the day 3-for-8 with 2 RBIs and one run scored.

Sophomores Drew Bene and Cash Gladfelter added three hits themselves on the day, with Bene scoring one run and Gladfelter driving in two runs.

Senior Ryan McMillen has now reached base in 19 consecutive games, including all 12 PSAC East contests. Junior Grant Hoover extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Freshman Jacob Menders made his first career conference start for the Raiders in Game 1 with junior Andy Crum and sophomore Michael Hope pitching out of the bullpen. Hope would eventually collect the win for SU in Game 1.

Hoover started Game 2 for Shippensburg, with Crum making another relief appearance out of the bullpen to finish the game.

Shippensburg will return to action Tuesday at 3 p.m. when it will be on the road to take on Wilmington (DE) in a single nine-inning game.

Game 1

After Lock Haven took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, SU responded with a two-run third to take the lead. Senior Ryan McMillen doubled to left-center field, scoring Hoover. Gladfelter then followed that with a single up the middle to drive in McMillen.

SU added a third run in the fifth on another Gladfelter RBI single that scored freshman Matt Ketterer. Lock Haven tied the game in the sixth off Crum, eventually setting the stage for extra innings.

Menders pitched five quality innings for the Raiders, giving up one run on three hits while striking out three. Crum relieved him in the sixth and was eventually relieved by Hope.

Hope kept Lock Haven off the board in the seventh to send the game to extras with the Raiders coming to the plate. In the eighth, Hoiles singled to give the Raiders a one-out baserunner. After he advanced to second on a fielder's choice which was then followed by a Bene walk, the Raiders had runners on first and second with two outs.

Goertzen tagged a line-drive single to right, scoring Hoiles, and giving the Raiders a one-run advantage. Spangler followed Goertzen with a single to right to add an insurance run for SU with three outs to get.

Hope retired Lock Haven in the eighth, ending the game with a strikeout, to secure the win for SU.

Game 2

The Raiders scored in the top of the first on a RBI single up the middle from Hoiles that scored McMillen. The Bald Eagles responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own tying the game at one.

SU took the lead in the third when Hoiles reached on an error, driving in McMillen. Lock Haven scored three runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 advantage and the Raiders could not respond ultimately dropping the final game of the four-game series.

Hoover pitched four innings and recorded one strikeout in the loss. Crum pitched out of relief and threw two scoreless innings with one strikeout.
