The Shippensburg University softball team posted a doubleheader split Sunday at Wilmington (Del.), posting a 4-3 victory in Game 1 before dropping Game 2 by a 6-0 score in non-conference action from Asbury Field in New Castle, Del.
Â
Shippensburg (25-18) avenged an early-season loss to Wilmington (30-17) with the Game 1 victory, getting an early RBI-single from junior
Chloe Collins and benefiting from a couple of errors in the second inning to help pad its lead. The Wildcats got the 11th shutout of the season from Caitlyn Whiteside in the nightcap to split the twinbill.
Â
Sophomore
Taryn Wilson notched her third win in two days, throwing a complete-game victory in the opener. Wilson scattered three runs on seven hits, walking just one and striking out five, in improving her season record to 10-3. She becomes the first SU pitcher with double-digit victories in a season since current pitching coach
Emily Goshorn was 25-4 in the 2014 season.
Â
Sophomore
Nicole Smith, Collins and sophomore
Julia Tosti combined to pitch Game 2. Tosti pitched 3.1 shutout innings of relief, striking out three.
Â
Collins had three of SU's 10 hits on the day and also stole a base. Juniors
Tara Bicko and
Macy Luck, along with freshman
Micaela Ghanayem, finished the day with multiple hits – Bicko and Luck also drew walks to reach base three times on the day.
Shippensburg will head to East Stroudsburg on Friday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the Warriors before returning home Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with West Chester to conclude the regular season.Â
