Softball Splits Road Doubleheader Friday at East Stroudsburg

SU takes Game 1, 5-2; drops Game 2, 7-2, as Collins totals five hits

The Shippensburg University softball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader at East Stroudsburg on Friday, taking Game 1, 5-2, but dropping Game 2, 7-2, on a sunny afternoon at Zimbar Field.

Shippensburg (26-19, 8-6 PSAC East) has already clinched a PSAC Tournament berth entering the final day of the season, but the Raiders are now locked into the third seed in the Eastern Division based on the results of Friday's league games. Kutztown and West Chester are tied atop the division with 11-3 records, and the Raiders are three games behind with two games to play.

SU got five singles on the day from junior Chloe Collins, and three singles each from freshmen Kayla Bonawitz and Kendall Geis. Junior Tara Bicko had two doubles, two walks and three of SU's four RBIs on the day.

Sophomore Taryn Wilson won the opener in the circle, scattering 10 hits in allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out six. Wilson improved her record to 11-3. Collins, sophomore Julia Tosti and sophomore Nicole Smith combined to pitch Game 2.

In Game 1, freshman Meghan Klee delivered an RBI single in the third inning to make the score 1-1. The Raiders took advantage of two ESU errors in the fifth to score three runs, and added one more in the sixth on an RBI double by Bicko. Wilson stranded the bases loaded in the seventh with a fly out to center.

East Stroudsburg (13-26, 4-12) held a 3-2 lead heading into the sixth inning of Game 2 and clinched it late with a four-run frame, capitalizing on a two-out, bases-loaded double to take control. Bicko's two-run double in the second inning gave SU an early lead.

Shippensburg hosts No. 20 West Chester at 1 p.m. Saturday to conclude the regular season. The doubleheader from Robb Field will be pivotal for the Raiders, who currently sit at No. 9 in the NCAA Atlantic Region Rankings.
