SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University softball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader with Millersville on Saturday, winning Game 1, 7-5, but dropping Game 2, 7-3 on a cold, windy afternoon at Robb Field.
Â
Shippensburg (16-13, 1-3 PSAC East) hit .358 on the day, cranking out 19 hits and striking out just three times. The Raiders got a win in the opener from junior
Chloe Collins, who allowed three runs in five innings, and a save from sophomore
Julia Tosti, who got the final six outs. Sophomore
Taryn Wilson struck out eight in the nightcap.
Â
Millersville (14-13, 1-1) hit three home runs in Game 2 to salvage a split. The Marauders had 15 hits and committed just one error on the day. Brittany Smith hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to swing the nightcap in MU's favor.
Â
Junior
Tara Bicko was the offensive star, reaching base in seven of her eight plate appearances. Bicko had four RBIs and four hits, including a three-run homer in the second inning of Game 1. She also drew three walks. Her only out was a loud liner to right field in the opener. Bicko was 2-for-2 with two walks in the nightcap.
Â
Collins reached base five times, totaling two hits, two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Her base running in Game 1 was pivotal to scoring an integral fifth-inning run; she went first-to-third with a strong read off a single and later tagged up on a diving play by the shortstop for a rare sacrifice fly from just off the infield dirt.
Â
Freshman
Kayla Bonawitz had three hits, an RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored. Of the additional Raiders with multiple hits on the day, freshman
Emily Zaring had an RBI-double, while junior
Macy Luck had two hits, a steal and a walk.
Â
Junior
Maddie Mulhall and freshman
Meghan Klee each had a double among their two hits.
Â
All nine Raider starters had at least one hit overall, including an RBI-double from freshman
Micaela Ghanayem. Freshman
Kendall Geis had an RBI and two sacrifices. SU totaled five extra-base hits in the doubleheader.
Â
Shippensburg hits the road Wednesday for a 2:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Shepherd.Â
