SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg University senior running back Cole Chiappialle was named Thursday afternoon to the 2017-18 Academic All-District Super Region 1 Football Team, a prestigious award that is annually voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Chiappialle, a criminal justice major, possesses a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.56. He is one of just two running backs selected from Super Region 1 along with his teammate, graduate Colin McDermott. Super Region 1 consists of all Division II football schools in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Mountain East Conference (MEC), Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) and the Northeast 10 Conference (NE-10).

The All-District honor is the first of Chiappialle's career. He is one of three Red Raiders honored with 2017 Academic All-District honors along with McDermott and senior quarterback Ryan Zapoticky. SU has now had 10 Academic All-District football players in seven seasons under head coach Mark 'Mac' Maciejewski.

Chiappialle, a 2017 All-PSAC Second Team selection, has rushed for 688 yards and nine touchdowns while hauling in 26 receptions for 186 yards. He ranks ninth in the PSAC in rushing despite missing two full games due to injury. Chiappialle ranks fourth in the PSAC in rushing touchdowns and has averaged more than 75 yards per game on the ground this season.

In 20 career games as a Red Raider, Chiappialle has totaled 1,262 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns, averaging 4.9 yards per carry. He also has 55 receptions for 478 yards and a receiving touchdown. As a return specialist, Chiappialle has 396 punt-return yards and two punt-return touchdowns. He has amassed 2,711 all-purpose yards (135.6 yards per game) in an SU uniform.

There are four Division II Academic All-District™ Football teams, one for each of the Super Regions as defined by the NCAA. The purpose of the program is to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To qualify for a student-athlete must be a sophomore or older who maintains a cumulative 3.30 GPA or higher and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games.

The Academic All-District™ honorees from each of the four regions will advance to the Academic All-America™ ballot. Academic All-Americans will be announced the week of December 11.
