SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg University junior safety
Richard Sheler was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Football Defensive Player of the Week on Monday morning by the league office, becoming the second Red Raider to receive a PSAC weekly honor this season.
Sheler had six tackles, two interceptions and two additional pass breakups in Shippensburg's 27-13 road victory at Kutztown on Saturday. Both of Sheler's interceptions came in the second quarter and stymied KU scoring drives.
His first interception was a toe-tapping play on the boundary of the end zone that resulted in a touchback. The second interception came after SU's only turnover, and it again stopped a KU drive that had made its way into SU territory.
Sheler had as many interceptions of Golden Bear quarterback Collin DiGalbo in one quarter Saturday as DiGalbo had thrown all season (2 INTs in 230 pass attempts).
Overall, Shippensburg's defense held Kutztown to its fewest offensive yards (220) in eight years. KU, averaging 36.5 points per game this season, was held without an offensive touchdown until the 8:44 mark of the fourth quarter.
Sheler joins junior defensive end
Dakota Thompson as a Red Raider to receive PSAC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season. Thompson was honored Oct. 2.
Shippensburg hosts Bloomsburg at 1 p.m. Saturday from SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium.
