The Shippensburg University wrestling team won two of its three matches on Saturday at the Kutztown University Duals, defeating American International (39-9) and Minot State (36-6) before falling to No. 23 Tiffin (30-12) in action held from Keystone Arena.
Â
Sophomore
Dustin Steffenino was the only Raider to win all three of his bouts on the day, as he capped off a 4-0 weekend with two technical falls and a pin on a highly successful day.
Â
SU's third bout featured prime competition from No. 23 Tiffin – the No. 6-ranked team from Super Region 2. Six Dragon wrestlers that faced the Raiders were regionally-ranked, including three whom are in the national rankings.
Â
Steffenino led off with a victory by fall in 49 seconds, while freshman
Cole Rush scored a second-period pin to put the Raiders up 12-0. However, that was the extent of the points in the match for the Raiders despite several competitive bouts.
Â
Tiffin won six decisions – all of which were decided by four points or less. Senior
Karl Lightner went toe-to-toe with No. 9 Zach Grine, Super Region 2's No. 2-ranked 141-pounder, but dropped a 6-5 decision. The Dragons capped the match with a pin by the country's No. 6-ranked heavyweight, Garrett Grey.
Â
The signature bout was a clash of nationally-ranked opponents at 197 pounds, but Ramos dropped an 8-4 decision to No. 12-ranked Kevin Christman – Christman had pinned each of his previous three opponents on the day in a combined 4:45. The loss is just the second of the season for Ramos.
Â
Freshman
Ryan Narber had an excellent day of competition for the Raiders over two weight classes. Narber began with 10-0 and 12-2 major decisions before dropping a 1-0 decision to Chase Boyd, ranked No. 7 in Super Region 2.
Â
Junior
Hunter Fenk had two non-forfeit wins on the day, including a victory by fall, while Ramos had 12-0 major decision among his two victories.
Â
Shippensburg returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when it travels to Millersville for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Division II dual meet with the Marauders from Pucillo Gymnasium.
