The Shippensburg University men's soccer team scored three times in the second half Wednesday to achieve a 4-1 road victory over non-conference opponent Holy Family on a sunny and warm afternoon in Philadelphia.
Shippensburg is 3-0 to start a season for the first time since 2000. SU began that year with four straight wins.
The Raiders and Holy Family (1-2) were deadlocked 1-1 entering halftime. Sophomore
Cole Kropnick opened the scoring less than 90 seconds into the contest off an assist from senior
Colten Arnold, but the Tigers got an equalizer in the 38th minute.
Arnold scored two of SU's three second-half strikes, giving him a total of six points for the match. He took a pass from sophomore
Jake Shefsky in the 56th minute and scored in the upper right of the net to put SU up 2-1. Later, Arnold added an insurance tally in the 82nd minute off an assist from senior
Collin McConnell.
For the season, Arnold now has three goals and four assists (10 points) through just three matches.
Freshman
Alejandro Fernandez was credited with his first goal – his tally gave SU a 3-1 lead in the 59th minute. Fernandez converted a rebound off an Arnold shot.
SU posted an 8-5 margin in shots on goal over the Tigers despite the hosts holding a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Redshirt-freshman
Garret Watson yielded his first goal of the campaign but stayed strong and finished with four saves to improve his record to 3-0.
Shippensburg returns to action at 1:30 p.m. Saturday with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) showdown against Slippery Rock from David See Field.
