The Shippensburg University men's soccer team was defeated in double overtime on Tuesday, as the Raiders dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 decision to Pitt-Johnstown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest at UPJ's Soccer Field.
Shippensburg (3-2, 1-2 PSAC) yielded an own goal just 80 seconds into the match and was chasing the equalizer for virtually the entire contest. In the 84th minute, sophomore
Patrick Luebben knotted the match with a header off a cross from fellow sophomore
Marc Furfaro.
Pitt-Johnstown (1-3, 1-2 PSAC), however, emerged victorious with a goal just 1:38 into double overtime. It was just the fifth shot on goal of the match for the Mountain Cats, who achieved their first-ever PSAC victory with the decision.
SU out-shot UPJ by a 33-9 margin and posted a 16-3 advantage in corner kicks, but simply could not find the back of the net other than Luebben's tally. The feisty match also featured six yellow cards – four assessed to the Raiders and two to the Mountain Cats. UPJ goalkeeper Nate Kleya made 15 saves to key the home team.
Shippensburg returns to action at 3 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Salem International in a non-conference matchup from David See Field.
