Volleyball Gets Past IUP in Friday Night Road Match, 3-2

Goerl rips season-high 19 kills, moves to eighth on SU’s all-time list

Senior Annie Goerl ripped a season-high 19 kills en route to her sixth double-double of the season Friday night, while senior setter Maura Nolan had 49 assists, three aces and a season-high 19 digs, as the Shippensburg University volleyball team out-lasted host IUP, 3-2, on the road inside the Kovalchick Complex.
 
Set scores were 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 24-26, 15-9.
 
Shippensburg (22-4, 9-3 PSAC) hit .176 on the night, proving most efficient in the first and third sets. Sophomore Morgan DeFloria had 14 kills and hit .184 with three block assists, while freshman Kendall Johnson had 10 kills, five block assists and hit .240. Freshman Samantha Webber had nine kills and hit .250.
 
Goerl had 19 kills and 18 digs, swinging an impressive .217 despite a season-high 60 attempts. She has now hit .150 or better in six of her last eight conference matches.
 
IUP (16-7, 7-5) hit just .095 on the night despite getting a combined 39 kills from its lead hitters: Alexis Anderson and Natalie Cignetti. Both teams had seven blocks, while the hosts had 36 errors to SU's 23.
 
SU's defense proved important, with senior Maria Peluso leading the Raiders with 28 digs. Freshman Gabriella Johnson had another all-around effort with 22 digs, four kills and two block assists. Freshman Megan Forstburg again rotated in and out with DeFloria and contributed 17 digs.
 
Goerl moved into eighth on SU's all-time kills list and now has 944 in her career. Peluso elevated herself to seventh on SU's all-time digs list with 1,370, while Nolan became the fifth Raider in school history with 250 career block assists.
 
Shippensburg remains on the road Saturday to face Clarion in a re-match of the 2015 PSAC Championship game. Saturday's match begins at 1 p.m. from Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
