The Shippensburg University volleyball team came up short on Saturday in a re-match of last year's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship match, falling in four sets to Clarion inside Tippin Gym by scores of 26-24, 19-25, 18-25, 28-30.
Shippensburg (22-5, 9-4 PSAC) got a career high 24 kills from sophomore
Morgan DeFloria, who hit .367 on 49 attempts. It marks the most kills in a match by a Raider since senior
Annie Goerl had 25 in Nov. 8, 2014 match with Winston-Salem State.
DeFloria's effort is also the most kills by a Raider in a four-set match since future Hall of Famer Jill Edwards had the same amount in a September 2013 loss to the Golden Eagles.
Clarion (15-10, 9-4) hit .405 in the second set to even the match and then hit .250 in the third set to take the lead. In a wild fourth set, SU trailed 23-19 but rallied to lead 25-24. The Golden Eagles then fended off four consecutive set points to remain alive and, after working the fourth set to 28-28, won the match with back-to-back blocks.
The Raiders ultimately could not overcome 30 errors, which matched a season high. SU also committed 10 service errors and managed just three blocks.
Freshman
Gabriella Johnson came through with her second double-double of the year, slamming 12 kills while providing 18 digs. Goerl was one kill shy of another double-double, finishing with nine to go along with 15 digs, while freshman
Samantha Webber added eight kills.
Senior
Maura Nolan set the Raider offensive to the tune of 53 assists – her second output of 50 or more assists in a match this season. Nolan also had 14 digs and three of Shippensburg's seven service aces. Senior
Maria Peluso paced the Raiders defensively with 24 digs.
Shippensburg returns home next weekend for their final regular-season home matches, taking on Seton Hill on Friday night and California (Pa.) on Saturday. The team will honors its seniors before Saturday's match with the Vulcans.
