Men’s Soccer Dropped by Penalty Kicks at No. 19 Gannon, 2-1

SU grabbed brief lead before Golden Knights answered with pair of PKs

The Shippensburg University men's soccer team dropped a physical road match late Saturday night in Erie, falling 2-1 to the No. 19-ranked Gannon Golden Knights in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) clash at McConnell Family Stadium.

Shippensburg (5-5, 2-4 PSAC) took a lead in the 70th minute when senior Colten Arnold capitalized on an errant Golden Knight keeper with his fifth goal of the year, giving the Raiders a 1-0 advantage.

Gannon (7-2-1, 3-1-1) answered a minute later, when Division II-leading scorer Hamza Mourchid was taken down in the box and converted a penalty kick to even the score. Mourchid converted another penalty kick in the 85th minute for the final margin.

The contest featured a combined six yellow cards, and a red card was assessed to SU's redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Garret Watson. Watson made one save before being relieved by sophomore Matt Harder. (UPDATE: This card was later changed to Colin Marks and removed from Garret Watson, and is now reflected in the statistics).

The two teams played to a somewhat pedestrian first half, combining for just two corner kicks and two shots on goal. Gannon finished with a 10-4 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corners.

The only three shots on goal credited in the second half were the goals scored by each team. Six of the seven cards issued by the referee were assessed in the final 45 minutes as well.

Shippensburg returns home at 4 p.m. Wednesday versus Seton Hill in a PSAC matchup at David See Field.
