Wrestling Wins Two Out of Three at 2016 North-South Duals

SU gets victories over Western New England, Worcester Polytechnic

The Shippensburg University wrestling team won two out of three duals on Saturday as it competed in the 2016 North-South Duals hosted by Ursinus College. SU defeated Western New England (51-0) and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (23-10) after falling to Stevens Tech (N.J.), the No. 18 team in Division III, 26-9.

Three Raiders won all three of their bouts: junior Dante Steffenino at 133 pounds, freshman Adam Martz at 157 and 165 pounds, and sophomore Evan Ramos at 197 pounds.

Those men were the only winners in the opening dual against the nationally-ranked Ducks, who got wins from the likes of No. 10-ranked Colin Navickas at 165 pounds and No. 9-ranked A.J. Kowal at 184 pounds.

SU's shutout of Western New England featured bonus points in 8-of-9 matches with one forfeit. Four Raiders recorded victories by fall: Dante Steffenino in 2:42 at 133 pounds, sophomore Mike Springer in 66 seconds at 149 pounds, redshirt-freshman Gray Garber in one minute at 174 pounds, and freshman Shaheed Hill in 3:50 at heavyweight.

Also winning against the Bears, freshman Dustin Steffenino and sophomore Cody Blankenship notched technical falls while Martz and Ramos posted major decisions.

Redshirt-freshman Jared Leonetti picked up his first two collegiate victories on the day. He notched a 9-7 decision over Western New England's LeMont Wallace and then got a 13-5 major decision over WPI's Peter Nash.

SU raced out to a 16-0 lead over WPI, with Leonetti's major decision sandwiching decisions by the Steffenino brothers, Mike Springer and Martz. Redshirt-freshman Shane Springer gutted out a 12-10 decision at 184 pounds, while Ramos scored a 16-4 major decision at 197 pounds.

Dante Steffenino (10-4) has now won 10 consecutive matches to match his entire win total of a year ago. Ramos (12-1) has now scored bonus points seven times this season. Martz (6-6) has won five consecutive bouts, while Dustin Steffenino has won seven of his last nine matches.

Shippensburg returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Elizabethtown for a 7 p.m. dual with the Blue Jays. On Wednesday, the Raiders host Millersville in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Division II dual meet at 7 p.m. from Heiges Field House.
