The Shippensburg University men's soccer team dropped yet another close match Saturday at West Chester, 3-2, in an evenly played Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match.
Shippensburg (4-4, 1-4 PSAC) has seen six of its eight games decided by one goal, including all four losses. The last 16 losses for Shippensburg have come by one goal, dating back to Oct. 15, 2013. Saturday was SU's first loss of 2015 that did not involve overtime.
West Chester (3-3-2, 2-2) scored first in the 24th minute in what turned out to be a back-and-forth match. SU responded with a goal, by freshman
Jake Shefsky, less than four minutes later. The goal, Shefsky's first of his career, was assisted by junior
Robert Furfaro.
The game remained tied for more than 30 minutes until the Golden Rams scored twice in a span of nine minutes in the second half to take a two-goal lead.
However, SU staged a late rally as Furfaro scored his second goal of the season off a feed from junior
Jeff Ballard in the 79th minute. Unfortunately, the Raiders could not find the equalizer in the final ten minutes.
The Raiders finished with eight shots on goal to West Chester's four. The Golden Rams had 13 shots to Shippensburg's 12. WCU had seven corners, while SU had six. Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper
Matt Harder finished with one save in the loss.
Shippensburg will host West Virginia Wesleyan, a perennially strong Atlantic Region opponent from the Mountain East Conference, at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at David See Field.
