SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup on a cloudy, breezy afternoon at David See Field.
Shippensburg (4-5) and West Virginia Wesleyan (3-5-1) played a rather even match, with the visitors earning a 14-10 margin in shots but the Raiders managing an 8-5 advantage in corners.
The visiting Bobcats scored the lone goal of the match in the 28th minute when Paul Smith executed a diving header to finish a bicycle kick sent into the box by Zach Whiting. It was Smith's second goal of the year.
SU had several chances throughout the day, with its best coming just six minutes after the Wesleyan goal. Off a corner kick, SU let the ball travel through a crowd and onto the foot of junior
Tyler Whitehead. The ensuing shot cleanly beat the Bobcat goalkeeper but rang off the crossbar and was eventually cleared from the box.
Redshirt-freshman
Matt Harder made five saves in goal for the Raiders, while Luka Pauk recorded two saves in achieving a shutout.
Shippensburg returns to conference play at 2:30 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Gannon at David See Field.
