Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches on First Day of PSAC Crossover Weekend #1

SU sweeps host Mercyhurst before falling in five sets and extra points to Edinboro

The Shippensburg University volleyball team split a pair of matches Friday on the first day of the first of two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover weekends this season. SU swept host Mercyhurst (25-23, 25-20, 25-17) before falling in five sets to Edinboro (25-18, 14-25, 21-25, 25-22, 14-16).

Shippensburg (10-3, 1-1 PSAC) won in straight sets over Mercyhurst (5-7, 0-1), marking the first time in eight meetings with the Lakers since 2008 that either team needed just three sets to win a match. MU won last year in five sets, while SU was victorious two years ago in five sets.

In the second match of the day, the Raiders came up short against Edinboro (12-1, 2-0). It marked the continuation of an incredible string of close matches between the two teams. Friday's match is the fifth straight between the two teams that has gone five sets (SU won in five last year, finishing 17-15), and the third that has required extra points.

In nine of the last 11 meetings dating back to 2005, Shippensburg and Edinboro have played to five sets.

The loss to the Fighting Scots is just the third of the season for the Raiders, and the second in which SU lost in five sets by extra points.

Against the Lakers, SU took advantage of 27 attack errors and 11 service errors by Mercyhurst. Junior Annie Goerl totaled a team-high eight kills, while freshman Morgan DeFloria was credited with six kills and a .455 hitting percentage. Junior Maura Nolan had 18 assists and 14 digs.

Sophomore Maria Peluso, playing in her hometown, led the Raiders with 12 kills against Edinboro and achieved a double-double with 10 digs. DeFloria was credited with 10 kills on a team-high 42 swings, senior Laura Plank had 17 digs.

Nolan had 31 assists, and became the fourth player in school history to surpass 3,000 for a career (3,009 in 87 career matches).

Senior Taylor Gottshall had five kills and five blocks against the Fighting Scots. Gottshall finished the day with one solo block and eight block assists between the two matches; she has 511 career blocks.

Shippensburg travels across town Saturday to face host Gannon at 10 a.m. before taking on Slippery Rock at 3:30 p.m.
