SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's soccer team suffered another close loss Wednesday, as the Raiders were defeated in double overtime by Lock Haven, 2-1, at a sunny David See Field.
Shippensburg's (4-3, 1-3 PSAC) string of close games to start the season continued, as the team has now seen four of its seven games go into extra time after Wednesday's tightly contested match.
Unfortunately for the Raiders, they have come out on the wrong side of the score in three of their four overtime games. Lock Haven (3-3-1, 2-1 PSAC) outshot Shippensburg 21-18, including 7-6 in shots on goal, but the Raiders held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks. Shippensburg earned six corners in the second half while Lock Haven had none.
SU took the lead in the 34th minute of action on an odd play that started with a throw-in by freshman
Jake Shefsky. Shefsky's throw into the box was headed by a defender towards the Lock Haven goal, and the Eagles' goalkeeper came out too far, allowing the ball to travel over his head. One bounce later, the ball was in the back of the net for an own goal.
However, the Eagles responded by scoring a goal for themselves less than three minutes later to tie the game.
Both teams struggled to create chances in a competitive second half. Following a clean first overtime, Lock Haven curled a shot in from the right side of the box to win the game a minute into the second OT.
Shippensburg goalkeeper, redshirt-freshman
Matt Harder made five saves. Six different Raiders recorded a shot on goal.
Shippensburg travels to West Chester Saturday for a 2:30 start against the Golden Rams.
