The Shippensburg University men's soccer team dropped a gut-wrenching 3-2 decision in double overtime at Slippery Rock on Saturday in a highly dramatic Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) showdown at James Egli Field.
Shippensburg (2-2, 0-2 PSAC) held a 2-0 lead with less than two minutes to play before Slippery Rock (3-1, 1-0), playing with just 10 men, scored with 1:52 remaining. The Rock then tied the match with less than a minute left to force overtime, as the SRU goalkeeper netted the game-tying tally after moving up field to play offense.
The Rock then converted a penalty kick with just 37 seconds left in double overtime to end the match. The penalty was awarded after the referee cited the Raiders for a handball in the box.
SU had built its late advantage with senior
James Connor scoring in the 54th minute by sending home a shot from a pack in the middle of the box and freshman
Marc Furfaro scoring off a free kick in the 84th minute.
Junior
Evan Raimist was stout in goal all game long, making a career-high 10 saves.
The Rock was credited with a 25-12 advantage in shots, while SU had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Each team was whistled for three yellow cards. The sixth and final yellow was issued to Slippery Rock just before they converted the game-winning penalty kick.
Furfaro's goal came after The Rock had been assessed its red card in the 81st minute.
The loss is SU's 14th straight by just a one-goal margin, dating back to the 2013 season.
Shippensburg hosts Pitt-Johnstown at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in a league match at David See Field.
