SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Tyler Whitehead scored with five seconds left in the first overtime Tuesday to propel the Shippensburg University men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Pitt-Johnstown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at David See Field.
Shippensburg (3-2, 1-2 PSAC) led Pitt-Johnstown (0-5, 0-5) for the majority of the match after junior
Jeff Ballard scored in the ninth minute. It was Ballard's first goal of the year; he converted a mini-break by sending a cross from junior
Robert Furfaro into the lower-left corner of the net.
SU finished with a 20-10 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks, but was never able to get a second tally in regulation. In the 88th minute, UPJ's Matt Kinney beat junior goalkeeper
Evan Raimist to a long entry feed and caromed the ball into the open goal.
Whitehead's golden goal was the first of his career and came on a scramble drill just before the first overtime horn. Sophomore
Colten Arnold collected a carom and sent a pass backwards to Whitehead. His shot went with some starch into the lower left corner of the goal to give SU the overtime victory.
Raimist finished with one save for the Raiders, while Nate Kleya recorded six for the Mountain Cats.
Shippensburg travels to Shepherd this Saturday for a non-conference match with the Rams. Start time is 2:30 p.m. from Shepherdstown.
