SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team went toe-to-toe with No. 2 Lock Haven on Saturday, playing within three goals of the PSAC leaders during an entertaining first half, before ultimately falling 16-4 to the Lady Eagles on a sunny and warm Senior Day at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (3-12, 1-9 PSAC), playing its second game in as many days and with injuries limiting several key players and sidelining others, exhibited hustle and a noticeable energy during a spirited first half.
SU fell behind 4-0, but a pair of goals by senior
Courtney Kennedy got the Raiders within two. Senior
Sheila Johnson scored her first of two goals on the day with 6:11 left in the first half to make the score 5-3, but Lock Haven (13-0, 10-0) got a goal just 13 seconds before halftime and added four in the first four minutes of the second half to take control.
Kennedy's two goals came in addition to assists on both of Johnson's goals. With two games remaining, Kennedy needs just one goal to reach 100 for her career and make her the 13th player in school history (and second this season, along with Johnson) to achieve the milestone.
Before the game, senior
Garrie Grenfell, Johnson and Kennedy were recognized for their contributions to the team over the last four years.
Defensively, sophomore
Annemarie Cericola continues to shine. Cericola had a team-high five groundballs and three of SU's four caused turnovers. Her 56 groundballs lead the conference, while her 31 caused turnovers are second to Millersville's Hannah Vogel.
In goal, junior
Ally Frymoyer made several banner saves. She finished the day with 17 saves, two shy of her career high. Frymoyer's 163 saves this season leads the PSAC entering the season's final week.
The Raiders began the game controlling seven of the first eight draws. Sophomore
Max Barkley added six more draw controls to her single-season school record total. Barkley's 70 draw controls this season rank fourth in the conference.
SU also continued its tradition of raising money toward cancer research. Last year, the team raised funds in honor of Grenfell's mother, Betsy Lee, who passed away from cancer. The team wore special shirts during pre-game once again this year and during the game collected donations to be given to the Susan G. Komen For the Cure effort and the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC).
Shippensburg's home finale is Wednesday against Millersville. The match begins at 4 p.m. from Robb Sports Complex.
