SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team battled PSAC opponent IUP on Friday, limiting the visitors without a goal for the first 13 minutes of play, but the Crimson Hawks used a key stretch of momentum before halftime to gain a large lead and ultimately outlast the Raiders, 14-9, on a sunny and warm afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (3-11, 1-8 PSAC) got a goal six minutes in from senior
Sheila Johnson, her 41st of the season – marking her 38th straight game with a goal dating back to her sophomore season. IUP (9-5, 7-2) eventually got on the board with 16:50 to play in the half, but the score was just 2-1 in the visitors' favor with eight minutes remaining before halftime.
Â
Johnson scored again just 2:17 before halftime to end a five-goal IUP rally and make the score 5-2. However, the Crimson Hawks got three goals in the final 60 seconds of the first half to lead 8-2 at the intermission. SU was unable to get within less than four goals the rest of the way.
Â
Overall, Johnson and senior
Courtney Kennedy each had hat tricks. Johnson also had two assists, while Kennedy added four groundballs and three draw controls. Kennedy is just three goals shy of becoming the 13th player in school history with 100 or more career goals and would join Johnson as the second player to achieve the feat this season.
Â
Sophomore
Max Barkley became the new SU single-season record holder for draw controls after adding three to her total on Friday. Barkley has 64 draw controls this season, putting her ahead of Kelly Sims's record in 1999.
Â
Sophomore

Allison Fugate and freshman
Jordan Kengor also scored on the day for the Raiders. Sophomore

Â
Several Raiders had strong defensive performances in the game. Junior

Brooke Olsen and freshman
Julia Wise each remained staunch and added a caused turnover to their ledgers.
