Lacrosse Falls to No. 16 West Chester, 23-9; S. Johnson Scores Career-High Six Goals

Johnson becomes SU’s first back-to-back 40-goal scorer in 11 years

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior Sheila Johnson scored a career-high six goals on Tuesday, but the Shippensburg University lacrosse team dropped a 23-9 decision to No. 16 West Chester in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (3-10, 1-7 PSAC) and West Chester (8-4, 6-3) were tied 2-2 through the first eight minutes of play, but the Golden Rams erupted for eight goals in a five-minute span to take control of the contest.

Johnson scored all four of SU's goals in the first half, getting two assists from senior Courtney Kennedy and another from sophomore Ali Harclerode, before scoring twice more in the second half. Harclerode, freshman Sarah McLeod and sophomore Max Barkley also scored for the Raiders.

In 62 career games, Johnson has now scored 120 goals. Johnson's performance on Tuesday makes her the first Raider lacrosse player with back-to-back 40-goal seasons since All-American Page Heath did so from 2002-04. With 10 goals, Johnson would reach fifth on SU's all-time scoring list and become the first 50-goal scorer for the Raiders since Kristin Crutchfield in 2007.

Sophomore Annemarie Cericola had team highs of five groundballs and two caused turnovers in Tuesday's game along with two draw controls. Cericola continues to pace the Raiders in both categories (46 groundballs, 27 caused turnovers) for the season.

Kennedy finished with three assists and five draw controls. Barkley had three draw controls; McLeod recorded two draw controls and two groundballs.

Junior Ally Frymoyer made 10 saves in goal.

Shippensburg will host IUP at 3 p.m. Friday from Robb Sports Complex.
