SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University tennis team won all three doubles matches Tuesday and four times in singles play to achieve a victory in PSAC Eastern Division opener, defeating Kutztown for the first time in 13 years with a 7-2 decision on a frigid afternoon at the Robb Sports Complex Tennis Courts.
Shippensburg (2-3, 1-0 PSAC East) competed outdoors in a match for the first time since October 7 and was impressive in its efforts on the court.
At No. 1 doubles, senior
Julia Saintz and junior
Brittnee Buckley posted an 8-0 sweep. Junior
Emily Cox and sophomore
Emilie Luttman posted an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
In singles competition, Saintz won 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 flight. Luttman earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles and freshman
Christine Devine triumphed 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
Buckley and Cox took losses in singles but both battled to near wins. At No. 2 singles, Buckley dropped the opening set 5-7 before rallying for a 6-4 win in the second set. A deep tiebreaker went 10-7 in favor of KU's Vicki Norman. Cox, meanwhile, won nine games in her match against Jessica Caples.
Kutztown (2-4, 0-1) only traveled five players, forfeiting No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
SU hosts Goldey-Beacom at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
