Men’s Basketball Cannot Complete Rally at Mansfield, Falls 60-52 to Mountaineers

SU cuts 14-point second-half deficit to two points, Sleva ties career high

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Shippensburg University men's basketball team cut a 14-point second-half deficit to just two points Wednesday night but could not complete its comeback, falling 60-52 to host Mansfield in a PSAC Eastern Division matchup at Decker Gymnasium.
 
Shippensburg (12-10, 8-10 PSAC East) got 22 points from freshman Dustin Sleva, which ties his career high. Sleva was 9-of-14 from the field.
 
Senior Dylan Edgar added his PSAC-leading ninth double-double of the year, posting 14 points and 11 rebounds. Edgar was a solid 6-of-8 at the free-throw line and 4-of-7 from the field.
 
Sophomore Abe Massaley had just four points but contributed six assists and five rebounds. Junior Jay Hardy had six points and tied a career high with three blocks.
 
Mansfield (8-14, 6-12) got 14 points each from Joe Bell and Thomas Moore and 15 points off the bench from Charles Pemberton, who was held to just one point in the team's previous matchup on January 10. The Mountaineers also scored 22 points off 18 Raider turnovers and posted a 38-31 rebounding advantage.
 
Shippensburg trailed 51-37 with 9:12 to play when Moore checked out with his fourth foul. The Raiders went on a 15-3 run, making the score 54-52 in Mansfield's favor with 2:15 to go. SU had looks to tie the score on two occasions but was ultimately held scoreless the rest of the way.
 
Shippensburg hosts Kutztown at 3 p.m. Saturday on "Play 4 Kay" Day at Heiges Field House. Fans wearing pink will receive free admission to the game a variety of events and promotions are scheduled, including a silent auction in which proceeds will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
