Wrestling Drops PSAC Road Dual Meet at No. 19 Pitt-Johnstown, 33-12

SU gets decisions from Kyle Taylor (184) and Jalal Paige (197)

The Shippensburg University wrestling team scored two decisions and received six points from an injury default but came up short at perennially-strong regional foe No. 19 Pitt-Johnstown, dropping a 33-12 conference dual meet to the Mountain Cats at Sports Center.

Shippensburg (6-12, 1-5 PSAC) got wins from freshman Kyle Taylor and sophomore Jalal Paige, while freshman Mike Springer received an injury default at 157 pounds as his opponent was injured during the match.

At 184 pounds, Taylor scored a takedown late in the first period and used a third-period escape to achieve a 3-0 decision. One bout later, Paige used two first-period takedowns, and a second-period escape and takedown to end up with a 7-4 decision at 197 pounds.

Pitt-Johnstown (12-1, 5-1) finished the night with three victories by fall and took a forfeit at 149 pounds to help key its decisive victory. Evan Link, a 2013 NCAA qualifier, managed a pin to start the night with just 15 seconds left in a match that was scoreless through the first two periods.

Sophomore Karl Lightner led 2-0 after the first period of the 133-pound match against Corey Bush but was reversed late in the second period. With neither grappler boasting the riding-time advantage, the third period was contested neutral and went without a point. Bush scored a takedown in sudden victory for the win.

Freshman Cody Blankenship sustained a quick, decisive shot from No. 6 Sam Hanau at 141 pounds that resulted in two points for a takedown and three back points, but Blankenship used a strong leg drive to evade a near pin. Despite being ridden for just about the entirety of the first two periods, Blankenship battled out of neutral in the third period and even put a late scare in Hanau by briefly getting him on his back for what ended up as a takedown.

Shippensburg will host Kutztown at 7 p.m. Friday and LIU Post at 7 p.m. Monday. The Kutztown dual is its final PSAC match of the season.
