Sophomore Erin Fife won the 200-yard butterfly Saturday as the Shippensburg University women's swimming team wrapped up two days of competition at West Chester University. In a tri-meet, SU defeated Southern Connecticut but was defeated by the host Golden Rams.
 
"I'm really proud of the way we came out this morning and raced," head coach Tim Verge said. "There was a better energy today for both teams and it seemed like they responded well, coming out and competing. It's a good point to be at, and there is a lot of work still to do. It's a nice stepping stone and to get out and compete."
 
Fife won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:16.33, while freshman teammate Sidney Owens took second in the event by swimming 2:20.57. On the 200-yard medley relay, sophomore MacKenna Angert, senior Rikki Sargent, Fife and senior Carolyn Meier posted a second-place finish in 4:10.23.
 
Individually, Sargent finished second in the 200-yard individual medley, swimming 2:18.49, and second in the 200-yard breaststroke, swimming 2:33.66.  Freshman Carly Alvarado took second in the 200-yard backstroke, swimming 2:13.81, while Angert was third in 2:16.41. Meier was third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.12 seconds.
 
At the end of the meet, Fife, Meier, freshman Lauren Ellis and Owens teamed up to swim the 400-yard freestyle relay in a second-place time of 3:43.53.
 
"I think we not only raced harder, but also smarter," Verge said. "We were focused on the little things we have talked about earlier in the preseason."
 
Shippensburg returns to action in three weeks with a home dual meet against IUP on Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
