Rob Furfaro’s Golden Goal Puts Men’s Soccer Past No. 22 Wilmington in Double-OT, 1-0

SU scores its second consecutive victory over a nationally-ranked opponent

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Junior Robert Furfaro scored a golden goal with 6:45 remaining in double overtime Thursday to give the Shippensburg University men's soccer team its second consecutive victory over a nationally-ranked opponent, defeating No. 22 Wilmington, 1-0, on an unseasonably warm day at David See Field.

Shippensburg (7-7), playing for the first time in nine days, yielded just four shots on goal and one corner kick to visiting Wilmington (12-3), the top team in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). The visitors tallied 20 total shots to SU's 11, but many of the Wildcat scoring opportunities flew high or sailed wide of the goal.

The golden goal for the Raiders came as the result of a foul whistled against Wilmington on the near side, deep in the Wildcats' end of the field. Sophomore Colten Arnold sent a strong cross into the box that eventually caromed over to junior David Katz, who fired a shot that hit traffic.

The rebound eventually made its way to Furfaro, who snuck a shot into the net for the deciding tally. In SU's last outing, junior Jeff Ballard scored a golden goal to defeat No. 9 Millersville, 2-1.

Thursday's contest is the sixth this season for the Raiders that has required overtime; however, none of those six games has ended in a tie. SU is now 3-3 in overtime games this season.

For Furfaro, the tally was his team-leading sixth of the season – extending his single-season career high. It was also Furfaro's second game-winner of the year and the fifth of his career.

Redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Matt Harder was solid in goal for the Raiders, making four saves. His best came arguably in the first overtime, as he made a lunging stop on a strong blast from distance by Wilmington's Juan Bernal.

Shippensburg has a pivotal game ahead in just 48 hours, as the Raiders travel to California on Saturday for a 6 p.m. match with the Vulcans. SU needs a result to have a chance at qualifying for a PSAC Tournament berth.
