Volleyball Resumes PSAC Crossover Schedule Friday, Finishes Day With Split

SU sweeps match with California, falls in four sets to Seton Hill

The Shippensburg University volleyball team began its second Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover weekend of 2015 with a split on Friday, sweeping California for the first time since 1988 but later falling in four sets to Seton Hill.

Shippensburg (15-7, 6-5 PSAC) defeated California (6-14, 4-6) by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-12. SU's set scores with Seton Hill (17-6, 8-3) were 19-25, 25-22, 22-25, 24-26.

In the first match of the day for Shippensburg, the Raiders used a balanced attack in defeating California for just the second time since 1996. SU hit .221 as a team against the Vulcans, including a scorching .364 rate in the third and decisive set.

Senior Taylor Gottshall was incredibly efficient, swinging .550 as she tallied 11 kills without an error on 20 attempts. Junior Annie Goerl matched Gottshall with 11 kills, and tallied a double-double in recording 14 digs.

Freshman Morgan DeFloria had 10 kills on a match-high 30 total attacks. Senior Faith Athey added seven kills and recorded a team-high four blocks in the victory.

Against Seton Hill, Athey was SU's most efficient hitter. She tied for the team lead with 13 kills but had just three errors, swinging .357 on 28 attempts. DeFloria had 13 kills and hit .186, while Gottshall had nine kills, swung .194, and contributed five blocks (one solo, four assisted).

Junior Maura Nolan had 38 assists against the Griffins to follow up a 34-assist effort against California. Goerl posted a team-best 18 digs against Seton Hill as one of six Raiders with double-digit digs. Senior Laura Plank had 15 digs in the nightcap and totaled 24 digs on the day.

The Raiders connected for 15 aces on the day – including 10 against Seton Hill. Sophomore Maria Peluso had five of those aces to go along with 15 digs and six kills. Fellow sophomore Courtney Malott had six aces on the day – four against the Griffins.

Athey now has 401 career blocks, moving her past Dana Boyer (1985-88) into second all-time at SU behind Gottshall. Now with 540 career blocks, Gottshall ranks sixth in PSAC history for the category. Gottshall is also 40 kills away from becoming the seventh player in school history to record 1,000 or more kills in a career.

Not to be lost is the fact that Nolan now has 185 career block assists – which puts her seventh all-time among Raiders for the statistic. She is 17 block assists from passing Erin Flick (2009-12) to move up the record books. Nolan also now has 3,277 assists, moving her past Amber Schmerfeld (2002-04) into third on SU's all-time lists.

Plank has now passed Jill Edwards (2010-13) to reach fifth all-time at SU in digs (1,475). She is 22 digs shy of Lauren Murphy (2009-12), who sits fourth.

On Saturday, SU will face Clarion at 12:30 p.m. and IUP at 3:30 p.m. Both matches are again at Lock Haven.
