Wrestling Wins Two of Three Matches at Super Region Two Duals

SU defeats Limestone and Coker, falls to Findlay in competition at Tiffin (Ohio)

The Shippensburg University wrestling team traveled to Ohio for three matches Saturday at the Super Region 2 Duals. The Raiders earned victories over Limestone (31-9) and Coker (26-13) before falling to Findlay (25-22) as it completed a modified schedule inside Tiffin University's Heminger Center.

Junior Cameron Throckmorton, wrestling at 149 pounds on Saturday, was the only Raider to win three matches – posting a major decision among his victories. Perhaps his most impressive victory was his last, as he scored a 3-0 decision over Findlay's Nick Goebel – ranked No. 4 in Division II at 149 pounds.

Seven Raiders won twice – with freshman Cody Blankenship going 2-0 at 141 pounds. Sophomore Dante Steffenino picked up two pins at 125 pounds, sophomore Karl Lightner had a major decision and a technical fall at 133 pounds and freshman Mike Springer notched a pin and a decision to his ledger as he moved to 157 pounds. Sophomore Jalal Paige went 2-1 at 197 pounds.

Multiple Raiders also picked up their first collegiate victories. Two freshmen -- Kyle Taylor and Arthur Watkins – were among the multiple-event winners. Taylor went 2-1 at 184 pounds while Watkins won once at both 165 and 174 pounds.

Senior Sean Sadosky, a four-year letterwinner with the Red Raider football team, competed in his first wrestling match since the 2010 PIAA Championships and notched a first-period pin to cap off the Raiders' opening dual-meet victory over Limestone.

Also against the Saints, Steffenino and Springer earned pins while Lightner and Throckmorton scored major decisions. Blankenship and Watkins won decisions.

In SU's dual-meet win over Coker, Steffenino notched a pin and Lightner managed a technical fall to put the Raiders up 11-0. Throckmorton, Springer and Watkins won consecutive decisions to give SU a 20-6 cushion before Taylor and Paige achieved back-to-back wins at 184 and 197 pounds.

The Raiders were originally supposed to wrestle against Coker and King (Tenn.) before a late change swapped King (Tenn.) for Limestone. Late Friday, it was announced the Raiders would face Limestone at 11 a.m. before wrestling Coker at 1 p.m. On Saturday, the schedule was modified further to accommodate additional matches in advance of an oncoming winter storm – resulting in SU facing Findlay at 5 p.m. The Raiders will no longer face Indianapolis on Sunday.

Against Findlay, SU got a pin from Blankenship and a decision from Throckmorton but trailed 19-9 through six bouts. After a forfeit at 174 pounds and a major decision by Taylor at 184 pounds, SU was tied with the Oilers before Paige put the Raiders ahead with a decision at 197 pounds. Findlay got a pin at heavyweight to snatch the victory back from Shippensburg.

A busy week of home matches for the Raiders begins Thursday with a 7 p.m. dual meet against Wheeling Jesuit. The Alumni Day Tri-Meet with Mercyhurst, West Liberty and American International begins at 2 p.m. Saturday. All matches will take place inside Heiges Field House.
