GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University football team ran 103 plays in its 2014 season opener Thursday, one shy of the school record for a single game, while producing 713 yards of offense in a 55-30 victory over Seton Hill on a warm, humid evening at Offutt Field.
Â
Shippensburg (1-0) produced 34 first downs and racked up the fourth-most yards in SU single-game history by virtue of a balanced attack that included two 100-yard receivers, a 100-yard runner and two quarterbacks who threw for more than 100 yards.
Â
SU and Seton Hill (0-1) combined for 1,104 yards in the game, including 746 in the air.
Â
Junior quarterback
Chris Lawshe became the 15
th quarterback in school history to surpass 300 yards passing in one game. He completed 23-of-34 for 310 yards and two touchdowns in addition to running for two scores.
Â
Redshirt-freshman
Ryan Zapoticky split time with Lawshe, playing approximately two quarters, and finished 9-of-18 for 101 yards and a touchdown in addition to 49 yards on seven carries. Both men threw one interception. Â
Â
The primary beneficiaries of Shippensburg's 411 passing yards were veteran wide receivers
Sheldon Mayer and
Trevor Harman – who combined for 21 catches.
Â
Mayer had nine receptions for a game-high 194 yards. He caught a tipped pass on a short crossing pattern late in the first quarter and used a variety of broken tackles, spin moves, jukes and other impressive maneuvers to evade the defense and ultimately sprint 88 yards for a touchdown – marking the fifth-longest pass play in school history.
Â
Harman led all players with 12 receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns (one from each quarterback).
Â
Senior
Blair Brooks had an impressive game, running 18 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 7.4 yards per carry. The highlight of the night was a remarkable cutback run in which Brooks stopped and reversed field nearly four yards behind the line of scrimmage, pausing to sprint through a gap that closed as quickly as it opened – scoring on a 49-yard as he out-ran the entire Griffin defense.
Â
Junior
Andrew Smith impressed in his Red Raider debut, totaling 63 yards on five carries that includes a 45-yard scamper in the fourth quarter. Smith also had 78 kickoff return yards.
Â
Shippensburg will host Edinboro at noon Saturday, September 13, from SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium.
Notes:Â
Thursday's game was the first night season opener and first Thursday season opener in Red Raider history.
Â
Shippensburg won its first road opener since 2005, when it traveled to defeat Kutztown, 10-7. SU had lost seven of its last eight season-opening games entering Thursday night. SU is now 59-47-4 all-time in season-opening games.
Â
Of SU's eight touchdown drives Thursday, seven were longer than 66 yards – including scoring drives of 96 and 97 yards in the second half.
Â
The 302 rushing yards achieved by the Red Raiders are the most since recording 304 rushing yards on Sept. 22, 2012 versus Millersville.
