Red Raider Football Triumphs Over Edinboro, 47-21, as Trevor Harman Sets Two School Records

SU senior wide receiver sets SU career records for receiving yards (3,555) and scoring (324)

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University football team scored 33 consecutive points in an 11-minute span of the second and third quarters on Saturday and had senior wide receiver Trevor Harman eclipse two school records in a 47-21 triumph over Edinboro in a conference clash from SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium.

Shippensburg (2-0, 1-0 PSAC) totaled 479 yards on offense against Edinboro (0-2, 0-1) with a balanced attack that featured Harman's 12-reception, 133-yard, 2-touchdown effort and a sturdy performance by senior Blair Brooks. The Red Raider running back had 18 carries, none for negative yardage, for career-high 170 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Harman now has 3,555 career receiving yards, which surpasses Jamie Ware for the SU record and ranks him sixth all-time in PSAC history. His two touchdowns give him 324 career points – breaking the Red Raider all-time scoring record of current Green Bay Packer John Kuhn '04.

Combining with the offensive attack was a spirited effort by the Red Raider defense – whose contributions were many and impactful. One week after being held without a sack at Seton Hill, SU totaled five against the Fighting Scots – including 2.5 sacks by senior Sean Sadosky and 1.5 by junior Cortlin Dell. It was a great day for the Red Raider linebackers, as Dell totaled 3.0 tackles for loss and senior Brian Sourber had an interception return for a touchdown and a blocked field goal.

Trailing 7-0 midway through the second quarter, Shippensburg capped a 13-play, 64-yard scoring drive with a 4-yard touchdown from Brooks that began SU's decisive stretch. On Edinboro's ensuing drive, Sourber blocked Paul Ortiz's 39-yard field goal attempt. Two plays later, Brooks had a splendid cutback he took 62 yards to paydirt for a 12-7 SU advantage.

The Red Raiders continued a stretch of four straight touchdown drives with a score just 32 seconds before halftime, as junior Chris Lawshe found Harman open in the left corner of the end zone for a 19-yard score.

After deferring possession to the second half, the Red Raiders marched 65 yards out of the gates in just 93 seconds to take a 26-7 lead. Redshirt-freshman quarterback Ryan Zapoticky had time and put some air into a ball that ended up in Harman's lap for a 33-yard score and his record-setting score.

Sourber managed his "pick-six" on the ensuing drive to give the Red Raiders a 33-7 lead. It was SU's first interception returned for a touchdown since Sourber's 63-yard score in the 2012 NCAA Playoffs at Winston-Salem State.

Save for the game's final drive, the Red Raiders limited Edinboro to just seven rushing yards on 21 carries. The Fighting Scots got an efficient effort from sixth-year quarterback Cody Harris, who finished 29-of-36 for 300 yards – 161 yards which went to reigning PSAC West Freshman of the Year Darren Massey, but his team was whistled for 10 penalties (101 yards) and punted seven times.

Shippensburg will host California at noon Saturday on Parents & Family Day from SU Student Association Field at Seth Grove Stadium.

Player Notes:

Redshirt sophomore running back Justin Pyle ran for a 2-yard touchdown to cap off a 9-play, 80-yard drive that concluded the day's scoring…it is Pyle's second career rushing touchdown and first since his true freshman season in 2011…

Blair Brooks totaled a career-high 260 all-purpose yards Saturday, including 79 yards on kick returns and 11 on catches out of the backfield. It is the 11th-most in a single game in SU history. Through two games and 36 carries this season, Brooks has been stopped just once for negative yardage. Brooks now has six career 100-yard rushing games.

Wide receiver Jordan Harro caught four passes for 32 yards, bringing his season totals to nine receptions for 74 yards. Harro had just two receptions all of last season.

Dell's 3.0 tackles for loss are the most by a Red Raider linebacker since Cody Fleming had 4.5 TFLs vs. Millersville on Sept. 22, 2012.

Defensive backs Chavez Cheatham and Kevin Taylor II set new SHIP career highs with nine and seven tackles, respectively.

Sourber's blocked field goal is the first for the Red Raiders since Dainen Green achieved the feat Sept. 24, 2011 at C.W. Post.

Team Notes:

Shippensburg posted more rushing yards (246) than passing yards (233) in a game for the first time since Sept. 22, 2012.

Shippensburg re-claimed the all-time series lead back from Edinboro, as it is now 25-24-1.

Shippensburg is now 15-3 under Maciejewski when playing at Seth Grove Stadium.

Harman Notes:

Harman has caught 12 passes in each of his last three games dating back to last season.

Harman had his 17th career game with 100 or more receiving yards and his 17th career game with multiple receiving touchdowns.

Harman has caught a touchdown pass in 12 straight games. He has had at least one receiving touchdown in 27 of 37 career contests.
