Second-Half Rally Keys Lacrosse Come-From-Behind Victory Over Millersville, 8-7

SU scores four straight to close out the second half, Johnson nets three and records one assist for the game

The Shippensburg University lacrosse team scored four goals in the last 11:32 of the second half to complete a comeback victory Wednesday afternoon over Millersville, 8-7, from Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.

Shippensburg (8-8, 5-6 PSAC) scored the first two goals of the game but Millersville (5-11, 1-10) recorded a 19-9 first-half advantage in shots and turned the ball over just six times compared to SU's 14 giveaways. However, the Raiders were able to keep pace on the scoreboard and trailed by just one, 4-3, heading into halftime.

The teams traded goals to start the second half before MU scored two straight to hold a 7-4 advantage with 11:42 remaining. Just 10 seconds later, freshman Annemarie Cericola scored her eighth goal of the season, igniting the spark to the four-goal rally by the Raiders.

Junior Sheila Johnson scored at 9:34 to cut the MU lead to one before senior Bennett Widlake tied the game at 7-7 with 7:29 remaining in the game. Johnson scored the eventual game winner with 3:15 remaining off a pass from junior Garrie Grenfell. Johnson totaled a game-high four points on three goals and one assist for her sixth hat trick of the season.

The Raiders limited MU's senior attacker Brooke Fisher to just one goal on eight shots. Entering the game, Fisher was tied for seventh in the PSAC with 3.38 goals per game.

Widlake scored twice and recorded two ground ball pickups and two draw controls while senior Liz French (Sykesville, Md./Century) collected four draw controls and three ground ball pickups.

Senior Ashley Pope notched one goal while junior Courtney Kennedy added one goal and one assist and senior Amanda Krok recorded one assist.

Sophomore Ally Frymoyer made 13 saves, including nine in the first half. She posted a career-best .650 save percentage – topping her previous single-game best of .500 set earlier this season in a 10-7 loss at No. 3 Limestone on March 17 in which she also set a career high with 17 saves.

The Raiders return conclude their regular season at 1 p.m. Saturday when they Mercyhurst on Senior Day from Robb Sports Complex. Before the game, SU will honor its eight seniors: Sarah Burkarth, Kayla Dalzell, French, Krok, Pope, Carly Ruberti, Kayla Weaver and Widlake.
