Lacrosse Honors Eight on Senior Day, Concludes Regular Season With Loss to No. 10 Mercyhurst

SU drops 18-6 decision to nationally-ranked Lakers in its 2014 regular-season finale

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University lacrosse team honored eight outstanding seniors Saturday before its 2014 regular-season finale vs. No. 10 Mercyhurst, battling the Lakers in the first half but ultimately dropping an 18-6 decision from Robb Sports Complex.

Shippensburg (8-9, 5-7 PSAC) answered an initial two-goal outburst by Mercyhurst (15-2, 11-1) with four consecutive goals to build a two-goal lead of its own at the 18:07 mark of the first half. The Lakers reeled off seven straight goals and led 10-5 at the intermission.

The loss was just the second for the Raiders at home this season.

Junior Sheila Johnson scored four of SU's goals on the day to give her a team-leading 40 for the season. Johnson scored at least one goal in all 16 games she played this season; her 40 tallies are the most by a Raider in seven years (Kristin Crutchfield scored 53 in 2007).

Two of SU's seniors also scored goals Saturday: Kayla Dalzell in the first half and Amanda Krok in the second half. Junior Courtney Kennedy and freshman Annemarie Cericola provided assists.

Sophomore Ally Frymoyer was valiant in goal for the Raiders, making seven saves.

SU's eight seniors combined for a total of 457 games played over the course of their career: Sarah Burkarth (61), Dalzell (56), Liz French (67), Krok (60), Ashley Pope (53), Carly Ruberti (47), Kayla Weaver (49) and Bennett Widlake (64).

French finishes her career among SU's all-time leaders for a number of categories, including 158 groundballs, 167 draw controls and 63 caused turnovers. Widlake finishes with 106 career goals, 10th all-time in school history.
