Box Score SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Bennett Widlake scored a career-high seven goals to go along with a game-high seven draw controls on Saturday afternoon as the Shippensburg University lacrosse team took a season-high 41 shots in a 17-16 high-scoring PSAC victory over Slippery Rock during the annual "Lax 4 Life" home game from a rain-soaked Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (5-4, 2-2 PSAC) took its most shots in a game in over two years as its 20 draw controls were also a season-high. The 33 combined goals between the two teams are the most in a Raider game since April 15, 2011 (Mercyhurst 19, Shippensburg 14).
Widlake's game-high seven-goal effort bests her previous career high by two and is the most by a Raider in a single game in four years as Katie Brewer also scored seven at Millersville on April 6, 2010. Widlake also recorded an assist and four groundball pickups.
Junior
Sheila Johnson scored four goals and tallied an assist while junior
Courtney Kennedy scored twice and added three assists for a season-high five points.
Neither team held a lead larger than three goals on the game as the squads entered halftime tied at 10-10 before the Rock (3-5, 0-3) scored twice in the first two minutes of the second half. SU answered, however, with five consecutive goals over a 12-minute span to take a 15-12 lead with under 15 minutes left.
Slippery Rock cut its deficit to just one on three separate occasions in the final 12 minutes – including with under four minutes remaining on the clock – but the Raiders managed to maintain the majority of possession and hold off any potential Rock equalizers.
Freshman
Annemarie Cericola scored a goal and had two assists while senior
Amanda Krok filled the stat sheet with a goal, an assists, three groundball pickups, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Senior
Ashley Pope scored and picked up a team-high five groundballs while freshman
Max Barkley caused three turnovers off the bench.
Senior
Kayla Dalzell scored, freshman
Amanda Frank had an assist and senior
Liz French totaled three draw controls.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ally Frymoyer made five saves in net to earn the victory.
Both schools wore "Lax 4 Life" T-shirts during pregame warm-ups in support of adolescent and teen suicide prevention. All donations collected at the game will go to the "Lax 4 Life" Foundation.
