SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team extended its winning streak to 10 games on Friday by opening its PSAC Eastern Division schedule with an eventful doubleheader sweep of Mansfield, defeating the Mountaineers by scores of 5-4 and 11-4 on another windy afternoon at Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (14-3, 2-0 PSAC East), currently on its longest winning streak in 10 years, smacked three straight singles in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim the opener before using an 11-run fifth inning in Game 2 to notch its first doubleheader sweep of the Mountaineers since 2001. Mansfield (10-5, 0-2 PSAC East) had either swept or split with SU in the last 15 twinbills between the two teams entering Friday.

The Raiders built a quick 4-0 lead in the opener, scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. SU got an RBI-single from senior Pat Kregeloh and an RBI-double from freshman Isaac Stern in the first before senior Michael Douglas launched a two-run homer in the second.

Douglas went 3-for-3 in the opener with two stolen bases and three runs scored in addition to his round-tripper. He finished the doubleheader with four hits and four runs scored. Stern now has a hit in five straight games and drove in a run in each contest.

Sophomore Marcus Shippey had a strong first two innings before having to work out of multiple ruts in the middle innings. Shippey escaped a bases-loaded jam in the third with a fielder's choice and induced a double-play grounder in the fourth after the visitors got their first run on the board. Mansfield hit a two-out double in the fifth but the hit did not result in a run after SU turned a successful relay and threw out a runner at home on a bang-bang play at the plate.

The Mountaineers did tie the game in the sixth with a string of two-out singles, including an RBI-hit by Anthony Renz and another by Dave Glueck that featured a Raider throwing error that allowed two runs to cross home plate.

However, Douglas led off the seventh with a single, moved to second on a single by sophomore Mike Marcinko and then scored the winning run on a single by junior Jimmy Spanos.

Sophomore Kyle McClintock got the Game 1 win in relief, pitching a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts. Shippey allowed four runs, two earned, in six innings while striking out five.

In Game 2, SU had been held without a hit for the first four innings and trailed 1-0 before recording all of its 11 runs and eight hits during a madcap fifth inning. The Raiders sent 15 men to the plate in a frame that featured four walks, three wild pitches, a passed ball and a throwing error.

With one out, junior Austin Allison dragged a bunt up the first-base line and reached with SU's first hit. One wild pitch later, he stole second base and also advanced to third as the Mansfield catcher did not immediately locate his pitcher's errant throw. With freshman Jake Kennedy still at bat, Allison came home to tie the score on another wild pitch.

Kennedy would eventually walk, prefacing a senior Cal Hogan (Williamstown, N.J./St. Augustine's Prep (Frederick C.C.)) single behind the third-base bag and a walk to Douglas. With the bases now loaded, Marcinko walked to give SU the lead and chase MU starter Johnathan Earnest.

Zach Sacoman entered for Mansfield and got Spanos to hit a sacrifice fly to left field, extending SU's lead to 3-1. The Raiders would then score eight runs with two outs – beginning with a single by Kregeloh behind the second-base bag that was capped off with a throwing error into the SU dugout, plating Douglas. A passed ball brought Marcinko home, and a shot up the middle by Stern ricocheted off the pitcher and resulted in an RBI-single.

After a stolen base and a walk, SU got consecutive RBI-singles from Allison, Kennedy and Hogan that made the score 9-1 and chased Sacoman. Douglas then rocked a two-run single off Dan Harms, MU's third pitcher of the inning, before a flyout ended the frame. Seven straight Raiders reached base after the second out of the inning had been recorded.

Save for the fifth inning, SU had just two baserunners in its five other at-bats during Game 2 – both on walks. The 11 runs in the fifth inning are the most in one inning by Shippensburg since April 10, 2010 at ESU and match the most in one frame under head coach Matt Jones.

Freshman Mark Curtis went six innings to improve to 3-0, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out just one. Sophomore Thomas Swartz pitched the seventh.

SU's current 10-game winning streak marks its longest run of consecutive victories since a 13-game stretch from April 3 – May 11 in 2004.

Shippensburg is scheduled to play at Mansfield tomorrow at 1 p.m. For all the latest news and information regarding schedule changes, please be sure to visit the Shippensburg University Athletics Web site at www.shipraiders.com.
