The Shippensburg University men's basketball team came up just short in a PSAC crossover contest at California on Tuesday night, dropping a 62-60 decision to the Vulcans in a contest from the Convocation Center that featured 11 lead changes and six tie scores.
Shippensburg (5-3, 1-3 PSAC), which trailed by seven points early in the second half, rallied to lead by seven points, 57-50, with 5:28 to play.
California (7-3, 3-2) countered with a 9-0 run to lead, 59-57, with 2:53 left. SU senior
Dylan Edgar tied the score with a layup on the next possession.
That bucket proved to be the final field goal of the game for either team. Cal hit a pair of free throws with 1:16 to play, but SU made just 1-of-2 attempts with 60 seconds to play. However, both teams had multiple possessions with chances to score in the final minute but neither could dent the twine.
The Raiders had two looks in the final 10 seconds but missed both and also came up short on a deep three-pointer at the horn after Cal made 1-of-2 free throws with four seconds remaining.
Sophomore
Abe Massaley was one of three Raiders in double figures, scoring a team-high 13 points with four assists despite running into foul trouble during the second half. Freshman
Justin McCarthur had 12 points, while junior
Jay Hardy added 10 points.
Edgar had nine points and 12 rebounds, while freshman
Dustin Sleva was 3-of-5 from three-point range and had three assists. Freshman
Trent Bauer was strong in just eight minutes off the bench, scoring six points and grabbing two rebounds.
SU shot 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) from three-point range and was 11-of-15 (73 percent) from the free-throw line. Cal made just four three-pointers but managed a 30-18 advantage on points in the paint. The Vulcans also mustered 15 second-chance points compared to just four by the Raiders.
Shippensburg is at Slippery Rock tomorrow for a 7:30 p.m. matchup with The Rock.
