The Shippensburg University volleyball team concluded its 2014 season on Saturday night, falling in straight sets to Seton Hill in the 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference PSAC) Semifinals by scores of 25-20, 25-10 and 28-26.

Shippensburg (19-15) out-blocked Seton Hill (31-4), who entered the week with the most blocks of any Division II team, by a 10-7 margin. However, SU was unable to overcome a strong Griffin squad that hit .200 as a team.

Faith Athey paced the Raiders with seven blocks (two solo) and added seven kills, while sophomore
Annie Goerl led SU with nine kills in addition to five block assists.

Courtney Malott notched eight kills; sophomore
Maura Nolan had 30 assists, and junior
Laura Plank tallied a team-high 13 digs.

SU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first set before Seton Hill went on a 3-0 run of its own. The teams traded points before the Raiders gained a 12-8 lead. Shippensburg led 19-17 in the first set, but the Griffins claimed the opening frame by scoring eight of the final nine points.

The Raiders showed resilience in the third set as well as they strung together multiple three-point runs. SU was one point away from winning the set at 24-22 and 26-25, but Seton Hill recovered from both deficits and finished the match with three straight kills.Â

Junior
Taylor Gottshall finished the evening with three blocks assists, giving her sole possession of the SU single-season record for block assists (125). Plank finished the year with 654 digs, the second most in SU single-season history.
Seton Hill's victory over Shippensburg is its second of the season. The Griffins got 12 kills from Cassie Hausfeld, who swung .407, and 11 kills from Shelby Kyllo.
Saturday's match marked the third straight season that SU reached the PSAC semifinals.
