SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Shannon Moran scored her first collegiate goal in the 52nd minute on Friday and fellow sophomore
Casey Rightmyer added a tally eight minutes later to propel the Shippensburg University women's soccer team to a 2-0 conference victory over Mercyhurst from David See Field.
Shippensburg (2-3-3, 2-3-3 PSAC), now unbeaten in three straight matches, strung together several scoring chances beginning with a late flurry on a corner kick by junior
Rachel Friend in the final minute of the first half.
The scoring opened at 51:10 when Moran finished a touch pass in the box freshman
Bailey Bzdak after junior
Haley Jones lofted the original entry into the scoring area.
In the 60th minute, Rightmyer caged her first goal of the season on a nifty move from about 20 yards out, dribbling around a defender and lofting shot over the leap of a drawn-out goalkeeper.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kayla Kennedy made four saves for her fourth shutout of the year. Kennedy has not allowed more than one goal in any of her seven starts this season.
Friday's match also marked the first since the season opener in which either SU or its opponent scored more than one goal.
SU out-shot Mercyhurst (3-5-1, 2-5-1) by a 12-10 margin and had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Shippensburg hosts Gannon tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. from David See Field.
