Volleyball Drops Crossover Matches to PSAC West Powerhouses Clarion, Cal in Four Sets

Jill Edwards collects her 51st and 52 career double-doubles, finishes day with 45 kills between two matches

The Shippensburg University volleyball team managed a set in each of its conference crossover matches held Saturday at Cal's Convocation Center but ultimately dropped both, falling to undefeated Clarion by set scores of 19-25, 21-25, 25-22 and 14-25 and to the host Vulcans by set scores of 25-20, 13-25, 20-25 and 15-25.

Senior Jill Edwards had a sensational weekend and capped it off with a stupendous Saturday – totaling 45 kills on just nine errors, collecting 32 digs and swinging .313 for the day. With double-doubles in both matches, Edwards now has 52 for her career.

Freshman Maura Nolan had 70 assists from her setter spot while freshman libero Maria Peluso collected 47 digs. Sophomores Faith Athey and Taylor Gottshall each had 10 kills between the two matches.

Shippensburg finally begins its home schedule Friday with a 7 p.m. clash against West Chester at Heiges Field House.

Clarion 3, Shippensburg 1 (19-25, 21-25, 25-22, 14-25)

Shippensburg (.179) and Clarion (.183) hit at a comparable level in the match but the Golden Eagles (13-0, 3-0 PSAC) managed 10 service aces and six blocks to help tilt the score in their favor.

SU did not commit an attack error in the opening set despite dropping the frame. In its victorious third set, the Raiders trailed 12-9 before reeling off a 9-1 run that included three kills from Jill Edwards and one each from Athey and freshman Annie Goerl.

CU then scored five consecutive points to tie the third set at 18-18, but SU responded with five of the next six and eventually closed the frame with an Edwards kills.

Jill Edwards had a season-high 24 kills and hit .379; she had just two attack errors despite 58 attempts. Athey had six kills and hit .211 while senior Samantha Edwards had five kills and nine digs. 

Nolan had 36 assists and nine digs, and Peluso paced the Raiders with 21 digs.

California 3, Shippensburg 1 (25-20, 13-25, 20-25, 15-25)

The Raiders had 12 kills in its opening set victory but did not hit above .100 in the remaining three frames against California (10-3, 4-0 PSAC). SU used a 6-0 run late in the first set to build a seven-point advantage at 23-16. Gottshall closed out the first frame with a kill on one of Nolan's 34 assists.

Jill Edwards had 21 kills in the match with seven errors and collected 19 digs. Peluso had a team-high 26 digs while Samantha Edwards had a career-high 17 digs.

Freshman Abby Mummert earned a start and totaled five kills, swinging .105. Gottshall had six kills and three block assists. Goerl came off the bench to rip five kills and hit .444 on nine attempts.
