The Shippensburg University volleyball team opened its PSAC schedule Friday with a split in crossover competition held at Seton Hill. The Raiders began the day with a sweep of IUP by set scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-23 before dropping a nightcap to the host Griffins by set scores of 15-25, 20-25 and 21-25.
Shippensburg (8-4, 1-1 PSAC) got 29 kills on the day from senior outside hitter
Jill Edwards and combined as a team for 22 blocks. It had an efficient hitting performance against the Crimson Hawks, hitting .248, but swung under .100 in the loss to the Griffins.
Shippensburg has a tough double-bill on tap for Saturday as it travels to Cal's Convocation Center to face Clarion and the host Vulcans in PSAC crossover competition.
Shippensburg 3, IUP 0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-23)
The Raiders swung .248 in the opener, hitting just 15 attack errors and teaming up for 12 blocks.
Jill Edwards had 17 kills and 10 digs, hitting .273, while freshman
Gabbie Holt flipped sides on the court and had a productive eight-kill, 12-dig, two-block assist effort and a .368 hitting percentage.
Freshman
Maria Peluso led the team with 16 digs from her libero position while sophomore
Taylor Gottshall sprang up for a season-high nine block assists. Freshman
Maura Nolan had 37 assists, five block assists, four digs and two kills.
Senior
Samantha Edwards had eight kills, matching Holt, and hit .278. Sophomore
Faith Athey had six kills and was one of six SU players with multiple block assists.
Seton Hill 3, Shippensburg 0 (15-25, 20-25, 21-25)
Seton Hill (12-2, 2-0 PSAC) neutralized
Jill Edwards, limiting the talented senior to a .098 hitting percentage (12 kills, eight errors, 41 attempts). Gottshall had five kills and five block assists, while Holt notched five kills, six digs and four block assists.
SU did manage 10 more blocks, including four assisted from Athey. Nolan contributed 24 assists and seven digs while Peluso had a team-high 15 digs.
