The Shippensburg University baseball team used a four-run seventh inning to pull out a come-from-behind 5-3 win in Saturday afternoon's opener before dropping a high-scoring 9-8 affair off a West Chester walk-off double in the nightcap as the Raiders split a thrilling PSAC East doubleheader from the defending national champion Golden Rams' Serpico Stadium.
Junior
Pat Kregeloh put together another solid effort on the mound for the Raiders (20-17, 7-11 PSAC East), pitching into the seventh inning of Game 1 and giving up three runs on just three hits while striking out five.
After allowing a one-run triple in the first, Kregeloh retired the next 16 consecutive batters, not allowing another Golden Ram (18-14-1, 9-5) to reach base until there were two outs in the sixth. The slugger also drove in the tying run in the top of the sixth on a fielder's choice.
Junior third baseman
Cal Hogan and senior catcher
Tyler Shover were clutch late in the win, with Hogan finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored. After a game-tying sacrifice fly in the seventh from junior center fielder
Michael Douglas, Hogan drove in the go-ahead RBI single up the middle.
In the very next at-bat, Shover hit a two-run home run to right-center to put Shippensburg up 5-2. It was Shover's first home run of the season and lone hit of the game but it proved valuable as West Chester managed to plate a run in the bottom of the seventh in a rally attempt.
Junior reliever
Austin Bartley closed out the victory after entering the game with a man on third and two outs and inducing a fly out to center for his second save of the season.
Junior designated hitter
Dan Wimer doubled his season RBI total with a career-high four runs driven in in Game 2. Wimer and senior right fielder
Cody Kulp each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the nightcap.
Wimer sparked a four-run second inning for Shippensburg with a two-RBI double down the left field line after an RBI double from sophomore second baseman
Jimmy Spanos, who finished the game 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
Wimer also hit a two-run single as part of another four-run frame in the fourth that was finished off with a Douglas two-run double down the left field line. That hit put the Raiders ahead 8-6, but a West Chester run off three hits in the sixth cut its deficit to 8-7 before an RBI single in the seventh tied the score and set up the game-ending double.
Senior
Tom Bush pitched into the sixth inning and gave up four earned runs off 11 hits with three strikeouts. Bartley finished the sixth before dropping his season record to 1-2 with the WCU rally in the seventh.
The two teams will square off from Fairchild Field tomorrow with the doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
